This full size carved Maori Kotiate is proudly made in New Zealand.
Kotiate were usually made from whale bone or a hardwood. This one is made from Tulip Wood, a sustainably harvested hardwood that is remarkably lightweight.

As per traditional carving, the butt of the handle is carved with a Maori face symbol, embellished with paua shell eyes. As in this example, the traditional kotiate had a cord threaded through the butt end.
This kotiate is approximately 31.8cm (12 1/2') long.
